As has been pointed out by others, broken wires to the antenna connector are 
not uncommon, and would be the most likely reason for the scanner to become 
deaf.

But also make completely sure that you have the correct frequency for the 
control channel programmed in.  It's all too easy to think you've got it 
right, but for it to be slightly wrong, or an old frequency, etc.
