You can also have the radio tapped at the discriminator (or do it yourself...) and use it for utilities such as UniTrunker, or if you are a railfan there's a package for that as well - I've forgotten the name of it. There are others, too.

Use it for ACARS - no tap is needed since it's low speed data. 

Use it as a dedicated receiver for a specific conventional service - such as fire dispatch or aircraft.
