The BC245 was built on the BC220 platform (which was really just an 
extension of the BC120).  I have had all three of these (the BC120 got 
stolen).

What they did was to keep the normal programming of the 245 pretty much the 
same as the 220, including the 10 banks of 30 (or 20 for the 220) channels. 
They simply "tacked" the trunking programming on top of this - without the 
luxury of a menu system, or dedicated trunking keys.

I always had the feeling that the 245 was a bit of a rush job, to get a 
trunking scanner into production without needing any hardware development 
(or minimal anyway) - doing it all in firmware.  The end result was a nice 
robust scanner, but with a very ordinary UI.

To their credit, Uniden realised this, and added PC connectivity (which the 
220 hadn't had).

The later scanners, of course, were built with menu systems, and presumably 
with trunking systems in mind from the start.
