IF you can communicate with the scanner thru the program, its most likely not the comm port. They don't start to fail, its usually a compatibility issue either soft or hardware.
 
Are you trying to download freqs from the internet right into the e-scanner program?

Most likely the communication port is failing. What type of communication
port are you using? Real serial port or USB virtual serial port? What
model if USB?
