One other note about scanner apps. They depend on the kindness of someone =
else to rebroadcast transmissions and if you're interested in military and =
a few other federal systems it is illegal for them to be re-broadcasted. Y=
ou can listen freely on the radio but rebroadcasting is illegal and has bee=
n for years. Also there are some older radios like the 245xlt which say th=
ey are digital. They support the older digital systems but not APCO or APC=
O25 so make sure you check that it covers the systems you want to listen to=
before you go for that great deal. I still use my 245XLT for monitoring t=
he analog fire dispatch simulcasts so when my 396 is humping on another fir=
e call I can hear the dispatches for the other stations and choose what tac=
tical nets I want to listen to. Just some food for thought before you spen=
d money. Good luck and happy scanning.

Scanner apps are fine until the s- hits the fan, then they go dark for offi=
cers' safety. That would be when you really want to follow the action.

Another option is to listen to your police via online services. There are =
many people who have already paid for the equipment to listen to police and=
other agencies and then broadcast it onto the Internet.

You'll have to move up to at least the 396XT but you might want to check =
and make sure state hasn't also gone to scrambled/encrypted. Local radio g=
roup should be able to tell you or a quick chat on Radio Reference site. A=
s far as programing goes FreeScan is available for free and simplifies that=
challenge and with an account from RadioReference you can just download an=
d upload whatever you want. When it comes to using the radio keyboard I us=
ually us it only for changes on the go and close call or search. Programin=
g is just too time consuming when FreeScan can do it in minutes and the pri=
ce is right.
