transistor for contrast on the display.  I remember fixing one for a friend
by replacing this part but I can't remember the specifics right now.  Try to
Google "dim display on BC-780XLT" or something along those lines and see
what you find.  It might not be the display at all but rather the driver.
 If I can scrounge up the information, that is assuming I saved it, I will
post it latter.
