The use of particular USB-Serial adapters has less to do with the
software application than the computer it is running on. If you can
get the USB-Serial adapter to work on the computer than most
applications that depend on a serial port should work just fine.

As others have mentioned there are several that work well. I have used
those by IO-Gear (GC232 for example) as well as Belkin, Kensington and
knock-off brands. Make sure whatever USB-Serial device you get
includes drivers for the operating system you have and make sure you
download the most recent version regardless.

I don't know if you are using Vista or Windows7 or not, or if you are
using a 64-bit OS. Make sure (if you are) that your device has drivers
for these OS's. I have several USB devices that will not work in
Windows7 Pro (64 bit) so I had to replace them with ones that would.
