If the scanner works, don't expect to listen to any of the rebanded trunk
systems. IT WILL NOT WORK ON THEM.

This is a good web site for Uniden scanners. Scroll down to Uniden Manuals
for older models.

The BC780 isn't that hard to program by hand once you have the manual.

Hello Pacman,

For $25, you got a very good deal, if the radio works.

To program the radio, you will need a DB9 cable, which is a serial cable
with male connector on one end, female on the other...IF your computer has
serial port. If you have a null modem cable, that will NOT work to program
the radio. However, if you want to clone the memory from one scanner to
another, you will need a null modem cable to connect the 2 scanners. if you
have a very recent computer with no serial port, get a USB to serial cable.

If you can find a BC 780 owner in your area with a good programming plan
that interests you, see if that person will clone or allow you to clone your
scanner from that one.

To program the radio, you can use ARC 780, or Proscan. Both are very good
and are widely used and well-regarded by scanner hobbyists. Scancat will
program this radio. And if you can get it, AFS 780 is freeware which was
available years ago, but was removed from its website. The files section of
this email group may have AFS 780.

The 780 was first sold in 1999, I believe. It's a very good scanner, but
dated. Uniden has few, if any parts for this unit, and won't service it
anymore. It has older firmware which does not support rebanded Motorola 800 MHz
systems. My experience is that this unit, and all other scanners prior to
the BC-796D will receive about 60-70% of the rebanded channels on a
rebanded Motorola 800 MHz system. It will work on rebanded 800 MHz EDACS systems
just fine. This unit is also not as sensitive as later model scanners. But
it does have a very good frequency range. The alphanumeric readout is
excellent. And this scanner handles analog modulation only. It will not work on
the many digital radio services that exist now, and the number of public
safety agencies switching from analog to digital is increasing every week.

Use the data on _http://www.radioreference.com/_
(http://www.radioreference.com/) to find frequencies and trunk systems to program into your scanner.

If you did not receive an owners manual with the scanner, download a PDF
version from the Uniden website. The manual is essential to learning the
scanner, unless you have a scanner expert friend who is experienced with this
model, who is willing to train you in using it.

Happy scanning
