I encountered this problem when trying to fix my tuning encoder. If the
tuning knob has taken a hit, the optical sensors inside the encoder can
read the light beams in such a way as to make the tuning reverse. You can
manipulate them very carefully, having opened the encoder, and perhaps fix
the problem, but it will be temporary. Replace the encoder with a new one.
