interface MFJ929 with FT100D for autotune?

Have been trying this weekend to get my old FT100D working with my MFJ-929 tuner, as a back up rig for my station. Both tuner and radio work well apart, but not together. I have the 5114Y interface cable from MFJ and I've followed the instructions on page 66 of the Yaesu manual for tuner setup, but the radio will not command a "tune" for the tuner. As a test, I can provide drive to the tuner manually from the radio and the tuner will auto-tune OK. I have also tried the two ATAS settings in the FT100D to see if it would work from there. But no dice. Anyone have any experience with this that can give some insight on how to address the problem? Your assistance will be appreciated.
