When you’re reasonably sure your mic gain is set properly, and your mic is
OK, the next thing to check is RF getting into where it should not - try
some ferrite chokes on your mic, antenna and power cables, see if that
helps. End-fed, off-center-fed, and mistuned mobile antennas as notorious
for sending RF back down the feedline.
