Reception of HF SSB utilities on the VR-500 is plenty acceptable for a handheld scanner. You'll want to do the narrow AM mod for best reception, but even stock it is not bad. As Tom noted, the programmable bandwidth will accomodate this nicely. The NAM mod is available via either Bob Parnass' TK500 freeware program or via a keystroke entry sequence.
