The VX-2R has a 4-conductor audio jack.  This one jack has to do 
transmit and receive audio, PTT, and programming.  I don't know if it 
will also accept a stereo plug, so be sure that is really what you 
have.  If the plug you referred to is a 3-conductor stereo plug, it 
should work in the VR-500.  As you mentioned, you might have to solder 
the correct pin assignment, but then using 1/2 of a cheap or old pair 
of earbuds is probably easier, as would the use of a stereo/mono 
adapter be that someone mentioned in an earlier message.
