eeyore, I recently had one of my VR-500s fixed by the good folks at Standard/Vertex, the US Yaesu importer. You can get more info at: http://www.yaesu.com/?cmd=ContactUs&DivisionID=65 My VR-500 needed a new volume/squelch knob assembly, because I sat on it or something similarly stupid. The servive wasn'tblazing fast, but I had it back, repaired, in less than six weeks. Unless it's under warranty, you make arrangements via the contact info to send it back, provide a credit card number, then they look at it when it arrives, after which they contact you with an estimate and for your authorization to repair it, which should eliminate most surprises. The total cost returned to me was well under a $100. Drop them a line and they should be able to set you up. Other stories of customer service from any vendor about the VR-500 are also solicited.
