The VR-500 headphone jack socket is dual purpose, it is a "stereo" 
socket used for mono audio and for programming data. For audio you 
will need to use a stereo jack plug in the socket, with the audio 
connections between the outer sleeve and tip. The inner sleeve is 
used for data. A mono plug will ground the data connection causing problems
with the rig. Hope this helps.
