For SSB, set the tuning step to 1kHz and, when the FUNC key is pressed, 0.1kHz. That way you can use the tuning knob to tune through one of the amateur bands fairly quickly, and then press the FUNC key to fine tune the SSB. You may prefer things the other way around i.e. a tuning step of 0.1kHz and, with the FUNC key pressed, 1kHz. For AM reception, use 5kHz steps, since this is the norm for HF, but use 9kHz for medium wave AM, unless the channel spacing is 10kHz in your region.
