I do something like that too for SSB.  For finding ham repeaters I like to use a VFO limit scan with the freq skip function.  Note that for the freqs in the skip memory to be used you have to stop and restart the scan after saving to the skip memory.

One thing the VR120 has that I wish the VR500 had is the ability to empty the skip memories all at once (or one at a time, which is what the 500 does).
