If I'm on VHF/UHF, you might find me using search mode to find active  
channels, unless I'm after weak signals when I want to hear everything  
possible. But on SW I think the best way to tune is manually, with  
squelch fully open. On SW you can have such weak signals that an  
auto-search would miss them. To speed up your travel across the SW  
range, you can set the tuning step to 5kHz, then if you hear an SSB  
transmission you can choose a smaller step size to zero in on the  
signal. That's my method...
