I posted a picture in the Photos section. I took the two mostly complete p=
ages of the CPU board schematics and rotated and pasted together a mostly c=
omplete outline of the CPU pins. The scans appear to leave out several pin=
s.
One of the pins that DOES appear, comes out of the CPU and goes to a safety=
resistor and according to the schematic, a probably teeny-tiny solder pad.=
This CPU pin is labeled "USER1" which sounds like part of the user port s=
ystem. If the code was stubbed as in actually included, but effectively in=
active because there wasn't any room left on the PC boards after layout to =
include the User Port level shifter components, then it MAY be possible to =
add them on our own.
If anyone has a clearer and more complete schematic and can list the names =
of the other pins that appear in the blank space on the Photo that I posted=
, it would help a lot.
As to where we could fit the User Port level shifters, I am planning on rep=
lacing my 2xAA battery pack with two shorter NiMH cells from a generic repl=
acement cordless phone batter. Like the original cells, they are rated for=
600 mAH. The resulting leftover battery compartment space could hold the =
level shifter(s) and another connector for access to them. As far as what =
the protocol is, I would start out by looking at the CAT commands for the V=
R-5000 which came out around the same time.
Next I need some quality time with a breadboard, and a tiny jumper wire to =
the USER1 pin. Any other pin IDs from anyone would be welcome and apprecia=
ted.
If we manage to use a User Port to gain computer control, then it would be =
worthwhile also fitting an IF output in the new battery compartment space f=
or an external IQ SDR mixer. Or, if the whole User Port idea doesn't work =
out, the space could be used for just a low power RF buffer amplifier and a=
n IF output jack.

As to where we could fit the User Port level shifters, I am planning on replacing my 2xAA battery pack with two shorter NiMH cells from a generic replacement cordless phone batter. Like the original cells, they are rated for 600 mAH. The resulting leftover battery compartment space could hold the level shifter(s) and another connector for access to them.
