Going back to an excerpt from an earlier post where someone got some
information from Yaesu, this tidbit really caught my eye:

So, the hardware support wasn't added, but the software was left in
place. The CPU wouldn't have I/O port pins added or removed as part of
the customization, designers just program pins. Therefore, the User
Port code is probably just sitting in the firmware, never doing anything
because the level shifter hardware to talk to the outside world was
never connected to the appropriate CPU I/O pin or pins. That would
explain why the schematic shows a CPU pin labeled USER1 that is
literally stubbed: It just comes out of the CPU, goes through a safety
resistor, and goes no further than a solder point.
The software resides in ROM on the all-on-one CPU chip, so it isn't like
there would be any special I/O port chips that would have been needed to
be added. The level shifters to connect those pin or pins to the
outside world are another story, they do need a few components and some
available PC board space for them which looking inside was in short
supply.
Ordinarily, the I/O level shifters for this sort of thing are built on
the logic boards, or in some cases on a tiny board that is mounted on
the back of a jack that goes to the outside world. Looking around
inside, I think that the engineers just plain ran out of room in the
case.
So ... We may not be dead in the water with the whole User Port thing
after all. That's kind of funny though. If we get there, it will have
been a good period of time with a lot of people pondering this.
