I have and have had a number of other scanners and SW radios but I am not all that familiar with the R5. Some radios do one or more things better but not collectively everything. While I often use another SW at home for serious use I would never give up my VR-500 for portable use or travel. It's small enough to get lost in a pocket and capable of listening to anything I may want. That's just my opinion and if anything ever happens to it I'd buy another.
