Re: VR-5000 resale value

I purchased my VR-5000 when it was first released, almost 10 years ago.
The radio looked so cool, I didn't mind dropping $800 on it.
Since then, I added the DSP and digital recorder option, but I have to say
the radio is not adequate for serious listening below 30 MHz.
The biggest problem has always been receiver overload/ swamping, whenever a large
antenna is connected.
There is no way around this problem, and the attenuator is not much help.
Not to mention the frequency display is always slightly off, and it's a bear to
program the memory channels.
Above 30 Mhz, the radio performs much better, but in the sense that it's not
a scanner, you can't add tone squelch - a necessity in Connecticut, where 
multiple users occupy the same channels.
I recently picked up a mint condition R-75 for HF use; a much wiser choice 
if shortwave is your main listening objective.

It's interesting to see that this model receiver has held its value so well
over the last few years, an indication of how many serious SWLers & other
users are out there. Considering that you can easily spend over $1000USD
for a fully-optioned VR-5000, or over $700 for a bare-bones VR-5000, it's
good to see that you can enjoy yours and still get a good return on the
investment when you want to upgrade.
