Not sure what new software you're referring to, but I don't think software will help. It seems pretty obvious that this missing LCD lines thing is a common defect which Yaesu should have issued a recall to correct, as there have been many people reporting the problem over the years. And while you may only have a "few" lines now, it can eventually grow to the extent that you won't be able to read the display. About 5 or 6 (or more) years ago, my 5000 started with a couple missing lines, but it grew over a period of a year or so, to the point where nearly half the vertical lines were gone. I sent the thing back to Yaesu, but similar to what you described earlier, they said it would cost close to $400 to replace the entire front display unit. They claimed that my unit must have been struck by lightning even though I explained that it hadn't, and the problem had developed over a long period of time, little by little. I wasn't about to pay close to the original cost of the receiver for a repair that might re- occur in a couple years. I posted about it back then, and someone posted a reply saying that they had fixed their missing lines by taking apart the front display unit, and re-seating some ribbon cable or something. Before I found time to try the repair, I had lost the post, and I couldn't remember the location of the part that needed to be re-seated, so I took off the front display, and re-seated the 2 ribbon cables where it connects to the main board, but that didn't help, and it looked kind of difficult to dig further into the display section. But anyway, I think that if anyone has a 5000 which is showing a couple missing lines, it's just the beginning and will probably get worse with time, and it's not worth spending any more money on a receiver that will probably get the same problem again.
