Hi Ed,
Yes it can be upgraded. I had mine done by Yaesu UK 8 years ago, to version 1.7 This was to cure the problem of the radio locking up on AM-N
It's quite expensive as they have to change the main CPU. 
Suggest you contact Yaesu USA. Also search this group for firmware version.
