There is a guy in the UK who does a programme for about £10.00 i used it and its ok,but you do have to get a cable,mine came off ebay.

I searched and found my old manual, and refreshed my memory re why I thought the manual was ambiguous.
On the page where they discuss the CAT, in the text, it says "Purchase a standard  serial cable (not the so called 
"null modem" type".    This is wrong.  Down below that is a diagram, showing the receiver connected to an 
"RS-232 cross cable".  This is correct.  A null modem cable is a cross cable which also contains a bunch of 
handshaking lines.  The handshaking lines aren't used by the VR5000, so a null modem cable will work fine, as 
will a cross cable that just has the S/R/Gnd lines only. 

Anyway, the text part of the manual is wrong, but the diagram is right, so if you were triple checking via the text, 
that could be the problem.
