I've seen that message, and the lockup with the original firmware too, but usually when trying to program via 
the CAT.  Whenever I'd try sending or receiving data to/from the receiver faster than it was capable, it would 
tend to lock up, and often it would give that low battery message.  
  Usually, just unplugging the power supply (the original one worked fine for me) for a few minutes would allow 
it to recover.  
   However once, it REALLY locked up, and the display stayed lit for over an hour after unplugging the power 
supply.  Eventually though, the display went blank, and not too long after that, it eventually came back to life.  
But I would agree with a previous post, that removing from power overnight should fix it.
