Re firmware version, if I remember right, just hook it up to a serial port, and turn on a terminal program like hyperterm with the proper parameters. Then, if you turn on the receiver, it will display the firmware version. However, from the age of the receiver, I would assume that it's probably the original. I forget what that was, but something like 1.3. User can't update firmware, although I guess it could have been done when display was replaced, but unlikely.
