Hi All,
My VR-5000 is in use 24/7 over a broad number of frequencies pushing JT9/JT=
65.
Two years ago, sent it to Yaesu, the front end needed a hearing aid, proba=
bly due to strong RF fields in the shack.=20
It was an early version so when the screen went dark, sent it to them last =
year and Yaesu repaired same.
On both occasions, while not cheap, they did a great job in updating, repla=
cing and realignment.
The only caution(IMHO) is to use a very heavy power supply (exceed require=
ments by two times at least).
It is a misunderstood unit and deserves a better standing in our community.=
It=E2=80=99s part of a trio of receivers (transceivers) in=20
my shack and holds its own with a top end SDR.

There are 3SK228 available on fleabay, and I'm sure it could be cross refer=
enced to another number.
If I were you, I'd send it to Yaesu for repair and a tune-up and maybe firm=
ware update.
I'm thinking it might make a good source of parts for my working VR5K.
But since mine is working just fine, I wouldn't offer any more than $50.
Even then I'm just speculating that I might someday need a part for mine.

Picked up a 5K in really nice shape but deaf 30MHz and below. I can hear lo=
cal BCB very weak on a 300' wire and from the last one I had these don't li=
ke much more than 10 - 20' of wire on HF. I'm guessing its the 3SK228. Who =
sells them? If they are lost to the world, anyone want to make me an offer =
on this radio as is Shipped from zip 01960?=20
