The VR-500 antenna has a known notch around 160 MHz, bad for the NOAA 
WX freqs in the US for example.  The VR-120 antenna is probably 
better.  I don't know why Yaesu doesn't use the VR-120 antenna on 
both receivers.

Check out the Pryme or Primier RD-9.  Every antenna is a compromise.  
I like this one overall for performance, not sure I can see much 
difference compared to the stock antenna.  But, it is very flexible, 
reducing the chance of strain on the antenna connector.  It is 
reasonably rugged, hard to break, but can be bent and kinked.  I just 
keep straightening mine out again.  It has survived almost daily use 
for several years.  It is very slender and light weight, making the 
radio more comfortable when handheld, more practical to use in a 
pocket, and harder to tip over.  Cost is $18 US.  I got mine at HRO.
