FWIW, I've had a macbook pro running fine under Ubuntu. The procedure  
was pretty straight forward and various useful pointers may be found

Using rEFIt avoided elilo problems.

All worked well so I can't see any obvious proble using Ubuntu on an  
Intel based Xserve.
