Dear Dr Postranecky,

I'd be grateful if you would forward the following message to the
BPARK list.

    Thank you.

JVF

Dear Dr Postranecky,

Thank you for the notice of the book about the Lorenz machine by
Jerry Roberts. Is this a posthumous work by the late Jerry Roberts who
was a member of the Testery? (Pages found on the Amazon site suggest
there may be a prolific author of the same name.)

List members may like to be reminded that the official report of
the group that broke the Loranz machine was declassified in 2000 and
published in 2015:

J. A. Reeds, W. Diffie and J. V. Field (eds), /Breaking Teleprinter
Ciphers at Bletchley Park: an edition of I. J. Good, D. Michie, and G.
Timms, *General Report on Tunny with emphasis on statistical methods*

(1945)/, edited and with introductions and notes by J. A. Reeds, W.
Diffie and J. V. Field (IEEE/Wiley, 2015). ISBN 978-0-470-46589-9.

Best wishes,

J. V. Field

"Lorenz : Breaking Hitler's Top Secret Code at Bletchley Park"

by Jerry Roberts

     Hardcover: 240 pages
     Publisher : The History Press

The breaking of the Enigma machine is one of the most heroic stories of
the Second World War and highlights the crucial work of the codebreakers
of Bletchley Park, which prevented Britain’s certain defeat in 1941. But
there was another German cipher machine, used by Hitler himself to
convey messages to his top generals in the field. A machine more complex
and secure than Enigma. A machine that could never be broken.

For sixty years, no one knew about Lorenz or ‘Tunny’, or the determined
group of men who finally broke the code and thus changed the course of
the war. Many of them went to their deaths without anyone knowing of
their achievements.

Here, for the first time, senior codebreaker Captain Jerry Roberts tells
the complete story of this extraordinary feat of intellect and of his
struggle to get his wartime colleagues the recognition they deserve.
The work carried out at Bletchley Park during the war to partially
automate the process of breaking Lorenz, which had previously been done
entirely by hand, was groundbreaking and is recognised as having
kick-started the modern computer age.
