Language can be understood as a phenomenon in and of itself or as a system in
the sense of Ferdinand de Saussure, who stated that “the concrete object of
linguistic science is the social product deposited in the brain of each
individual, i.e. language.” Language can, however, also be understood through
the interrelationship of linguistic action and social reality. In times of
borders becoming increasingly fluid and constant migratory flows, such
approaches are more and more critical. Although sociolinguistic research on
the German language is well-established in North American research, points of
contact with cultural studies have been neglected. This panel will address
connections between sociolinguistics and cultural studies in order to motivate
dialogue and intersectionality between these areas of research. This dialogue
may address, but is in no way limited to, the following themes:

- Social and regional origin, gender, generation, social groups, migration,
multilingualism, and language change and their influence on German
- Subjective factors of language attitudes and language ideologies
- Intersections between language and critical race theory, e.g.
raciolinguistics, linguistic profiling
- Queer theory and queer linguistics
- Influences of sociolinguistics on education and language pedagogy
- Varieties of language – Youth language; computer-mediated communication;
spoken colloquial language


GSA Panel “Zentrale soziale Faktoren und Prozesse und ihr Einfluss auf den
Sprachgebrauch im Deutschen”

Sprache kann als eine Erscheinung an sich diskutiert werden oder als ein
System im Sinne von Ferdinand de Saussures, der sagte „Der konkrete Gegenstand
unserer Wissenschaft ist also das im Gehirn eines jeden einzelnen
niedergelegte soziale Produkt, d.h. die Sprache“. Sprache kann aber auch als
eine Wechselbeziehung zwischen sprachlichem Handeln und gesellschaftlicher
Wirklichkeit verstanden werden. Letztere Betrachtungsweise muss gerade in
Zeiten von fluider werdenden Grenzen und stetigen Migrationsbewegungen erneut
in den Fokus gerückt werden. Obwohl die soziolinguistische Erforschung der
deutschen Sprache im Nordamerikanischen Raum etabliert ist, sind die
Anknüpfungspunkte zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Aspekten bisher kaum untersucht
worden. In diesem Panel soll es um die Verknüpfung von Soziolinguistik und
Kulturwissenschaft gehen, um einen Dialog dieser beiden Forschungsfelder
anzuregen und die Intersektionalität zu fördern. Dieser Dialog könnte folgende
– nicht darauf limitierte – Themen beinhalten: 

- soziale und regionale Herkunft, Gender, Generation, soziale Gruppen,
Migration, Mehrsprachigkeit und Sprachwandel in ihrem Einfluss auf die
deutsche Sprache
- subjektive Faktoren von Sprachbewertungen und Spracheinstellungen
- Intersektionalität zwischen Sprache und Critical Race Theory, bspw.
Raciolinguistics und Linguistic Profiling
- Queer-Theorie und Queere Linguistik
- Einflüsse der Soziolinguistik auf Schule und Sprachunterricht 
- ‚Spielarten der Sprache‘, bspw. Sprache von Jugendlichen; internetbasierte
Kommunikation; gesprochene Alltagssprache
