Enciclopedia Libre: http://enciclopedia.us.es/

Forked in early 2002 when Wikipedia was still directly under Bomis,
Larry Sanger was the salaried editor-in-chief for Nupedia and
Wikipedia, and there were public musings about putting ad banners on
the English Wikipedia to recoup costs.

Ad talk was shelved, Larry resigned and moved to other things, and
we're theoretically under a benevolent non-profit dictatorship instead
of a benevolent for-profit one. ;)

EL has had server problems at times and they've been talking about
switching to the current version of our software, but their admin is
(like us) overloaded and it hasn't gotten done yet. Re-merging talk
happens here and there, but I'm not up on the details. They're both
under GFDL license and things get copied back and forth from time to
time, iirc.
