th the quantum mechanical idea that, deep down, nature is inherently uncert=
ain. An elementary particle lacks definite physical properties and is defin=
ed only by probabilities of being in various states. For example, at a part=
icular moment, a particle might have a 50 percent chance of spinning clockw=
ise and a 50 percent chance of spinning counterclockwise. An experimentally=
tested theorem by the Northern Irish physicist John Bell says there is no =
=E2=80=9Ctrue=E2=80=9D state of the particle; the probabilities are the onl=
y reality that can be ascribed to it.
Quantum uncertainty then gives rise =
to entanglement, the putative source of the arrow of time.
When two partic=
les interact, they can no longer even be described by their own, independen=
tly evolving probabilities, called =E2=80=9Cpure states.=E2=80=9D Instead, =
they become entangled components of a more complicated probability distribu=
tion that describes both particles together. It might dictate, for example,=
that the particles spin in opposite directions. The system as a whole is i=
n a pure state, but the state of each individual particle is =E2=80=9Cmixed=
=E2=80=9D with that of its acquaintance. The two could travel light-years a=
part, and the spin of each would remain correlated with that of the other, =
a feature Albert Einstein famously described as =E2=80=9Cspooky action at a=

=E2=80=9CEntanglement is in some sense the essence of =
quantum mechanics,=E2=80=9D or the laws governing interactions on the subat=
omic scale, Brunner said. The phenomenon underlies quantum computing, quant=
um cryptography and quantum teleportation.

, when he was a 23-year-old philosophy graduate student at Cambridge Univer=
sity with a Harvard physics degree. Lloyd realized that quantum uncertainty=
