This is not forced  by Orocos itself, but by the underlying Real-Time OS. Both
RTAI and Xenomai require that real-time apps run as root. The RTT checks this
upon startup for these OS'es.

You can try 'sudo' to start only the application in real-time without 
logging in as root.
