Initial Comment:
During recent cross-compilation struggle, I've encountered problem described in summary - as a resuld of this problem, linker was complaining that ntohl symbol couldn't be found (while it is a macro) - according to ntohl manual, arpa/inet.h should be included (it solves the problem, at least on Linux)
