Consider an alternative explanation:  they're short of money and this was
a prime opportunity to get some publicity for raising the last little bit
of funding.  (Gary Hudson did say once that the flashy, much-hyped Roton
rollout was the only part of the project that made money.)

An air of boundless confidence, whether or not it's backed up by reality,
is a real asset to a fundraiser.
