Re: ecovillage and sustainability

The moderator has touched a key point:

...referring to 'traditional villages.' Yea, sure, they are (or were) the
ultimate models for sustainability: ecologically integrated into the
landscape, self-reliant local economies, organic growth patterns and
morphologies, size dependent on carrying capacity, social taboos limiting
population and growth, equable distribution of resources, accountability
of 'leaders,' deep knowledge of local biota, trans-generational decision
making, place-based culture, etc., etc., etc....they certainly could be
"continued into the indefinite future" but could we say they were
"full-featured?" 
Unfortunately, as the respondent from Brazil has alluded to, there are not
any traditional villages left that have not been deformed or depleted by
gobalization/colonization/exploitation. Nevertheless, there are valuable
characteristics of the traditional village to emulate in an 'ecovillage
design' for the 21st century. What is it about an ecovillage that makes it
a village? What is the distinction between an 'ecovillage' and a
'traditional village?' Is it possible to integrate selected, appropriate,
21st century technologies into dispersed, tribal social and settlement
patterns?
