See sc-fi author Arthur Clarke's domed cities conceptcirca 1962. This may
lead to cloistered insularity, an unfortunate fate, but I can certainly see
the likelihood as we develop stand alone power systems/building
technologies, sustainable urban agriculture, and ecovillage-inspired ways &
means of living together. Will we settle for a multitude of domed
city-states? How could they be organized to counter the current globalized
economy trend?
