Ecovillage Location Selection

If a significant concern of an "ecovillage" includes
protecting nature, which makes more sense:

1.  Locating in areas where humans have already
disrupted nature such that the natural system is no
longer functioning, and using our minds and technology
to restore?

2.  Moving into yet another pristine area and creating
a human-focused ecology?
