Credit Unions rock! The co-op/credit union started here in Nova Scotia and
the Cody Institute is still very instrumental in exporting the coop ethic
and practice to other countries. Encouragingly there is great enthusiasm
for coops amoung 3rd world counties. Discouragingly coops literally limp
along in most "developed" nations and spread way too slow!

Most EarthSea members belong to our local credit union which is very good
at lending out most of its money to CU members at great rates. The service
is still very personal-a live person who knows you by name there to wait on
you, but all very modern with interac and drive-up automatic teller
machines & mastercards if you want one. Our particular CU is running far
enough in the black that it expects to pay members a small dividend this
year! This is way cool-when was the last time YOUR bank offered you a slice
of the pie? The only trouble is CU's are generally too small with too
little market-share. The IC movement could do itself & all the world a
favour by mounting an active drive to encourage IC members & fellow
travellers to join a Credit Union ASAP.

We also do most of our food buying at a grocery coop, available in most
larger canadian towns. The credit Union and Coop have just started talking
to one another!! I have had a personal ongoing campagn to bring such
(obvious?) alignment about in our region for 30 years. IC's are another
logical link in the chain as are organic growers/buyers, Waldorf & other
alternate schools, Non-profits, EcoAction orgs, sustainable & social
justice orgs, etc, etc.
