Any credit union is a start away from purely commercial banking. Some are more eco- and/or community-oriented than others, for example the Permaculture credit union, Alternatives credit union, Sunrise credit union. Some are very much based in their local community and focus on working there, even though they do not have an eco or community focus per se. Alternatives are also underway for health costs - see http://ithacahealth.org/ for one example (I am a member). cheers, John S.
