Hmm...I am not quite sure why $document.xml.language is not having the
desired effect (I suspect it is to do with changes in the DocBook l10n
files that we use -- I have overlooked something). I suggest that the
best course of action is to remove all those three xsl:variables and
instead put lang="en" (or xml:lang="en") into your DocBook source file.
For instance, replace <book> with <book lang="en"> (or <article> with
<article lang="en"). You can also use locale specifications such as
"en_US", "en_GB", "en_CA", "en_AU", etc. If you cannot modify your
source (XML) files, I will investigate further. If lang="en" works for
you, I will update our documentation accordingly.
