Looks like an omission from the docs. Even bibtex output requires one of two
very simple styles: bibtex-full and bibtex-abbrev. You can use these to control
whether the journal names are printed in full or if you prefer the abbreviated
names - something that is hard to achieve in bibtex alone. Add these styles to
your refdb database, and the error should go away.

BTW did you set up RefDB manually? The refdb-init script should load all
available styles to avoid this problem.

There is certainly some wiggle room for improvements! I'll try to figure out
something appropriate. Would you mind posting a feature request on the
SourceForge RefDB site to remind me?
