@David: Could it be that the debian libdbi-packages need to be updated to 
resolve this issue? I'm using:
libdbi-perl    1.53-1         Perl5 database interface by Tim Bunce
libdbi0        0.8.1-3        Database Independent Abstraction Layer for C
