Thanks for the debug information. I'm afraid the refdb-init script  
still contains a few bugs. It should not check for dump files (this is  
now handled by refdbd), and the refdbd example config files were  
inappropriately named in the script. I've fixed these bugs in SVN.  
I've also attached the script template below for your convenience.  
Please put the file into the scripts directory of the sources (on  
FreeBSD, this is something like  
/usr/ports/textproc/refdb/work/refdb-0.9.8/scripts) and run make &&  
make install in that directory. This should replace the installed  
version of refdb-init.

Please let me know whether you get further with that version of the script.
