User is not properly added?

How can this happen:

    bronger@wilson:~/src/pyrefdb/main$ refdba -c stdout -C adduser -d biblio -W secret bunny
    236
    237:bunny@localhost:biblio
    999:1 added:0 failed
    bronger@wilson:~/src/pyrefdb/main$ refdba -c stdout -C listuser -d biblio
    999:0

The user _was_ added to the MySQL database (because I can see him in
the MySQL administration tool), but why doesn't "listuser" find him?
