Another issue is that the data stored in your MySQL database are not  
valid UTF-8 data. You just don't notice (except when you search for  
umlauts) because MySQL converts them back to correct UTF-8 whenever  
you retrieve data via RefDB. This is going to cause trouble if you  
ever upgrade libdbi-drivers.

If you do that, upgrading libdbi-drivers is certainly not required.  
And this is why RefDB uses libdbi after all: to leave the choice to  
the users.
