Slightly related, recently I've encountered low performance of storing PNG output via the standard JDK ImageIO API. When investigating the root cause I finaly found this JDK issue. Basically, any compression level settings was ignored and dafault value (Deflater.BEST_COMPRESSION) was used:

From JDK 9+ this setting is taken into account, moreover, default compression level has been changed to 4, which is close to David's proposal.
