I downloaded the pdf from the wiki, and pasted the text on a notepad. I get the same behaviour as I get on a PDF generated by FOP. I can't see any extra spaces. I might be misunderstanding the issue here.

Have you tried setting the hyphenation to true and set the hyphenation-character to the soft hyphen? I recently added a change that allows the soft hyphen to be used for hyphenation.
